I wonder why so many children are involved. In Shirley Jackson's book, they have a minor role :

• During the summary of the history of the house and the introduction of the previous family who lived there
• The little girl refusing to drink her milk in her cup of stars
• The family having a pick-nick is the "not so normal" garden
